PERSONALITY TESTS

Without doubt, personality is important. It is how you portray yourself to the outside world. It is what you will be judged on when people first meet you, both socially and professionally. Without doubt, personality is important. It is how you portray yourself to the outside world. It is what you will be judged on when people first meet you, both socially and professionally.

When you apply for a job you are very likely to have to fill in a lengthy form of questions designed to show the potential employer what your innermost feelings are on a diverse range of subjects such as money - getting it and spending it  - exercise, party-going, pets, companionship, hobbies, family, dreams, desires and so forth.

By the time you've filled one of those forms out you may know more about yourself than you did before., and your potential employer will know as much as you! What all this invasive busy-body  'personality testing ' is about, so we are told, is to identify management potential and see how you would fit into a team.

However, it may also identify for your potential employer whether you'll tow the company line and not sway the corporate boat by standing up for workers when a tricky decision has to be made regarding redundancies. 'personality testing' is about making sure you are, in no way, shape or form, a threat to the company and its profits. No longer are exam passes and other achievements, even hobbies and experience, enough.

Personality testing is carried out in the form of long questionnaires and, also, is assessed through graphology. These methods are employed by companies and other employing organizations, career counsellors and clinical psychologists. Whether they have any true value is a matter open to question, and in a hundred years time they may laugh at us all, but in the meantime our personality is not our own - it's in the personnel department's files! For that reason, if no other, perhaps it's worth spending a little time considering what our personality is, and whether or not we wan to change it.
