Basil personalities are often the entrepreneurs of the world and, male or female, are able to see what others may not even know exists. For them, opportunities abound. Ambition, flair, drive and enterprise get them where they want to be and, unless someone bars their way unjustly, they will get there without harming others, and by being honest. Basils have a wisdom far beyond their years plus a fair amount of luck - often missing ruin by the skin of their teeth, as a brilliant flash of inspiration gets them out of difficult situations. it sometimes seems as if Basils have spiritual intervention in times of crisis - an advantage not a lot of us have.

The Basil personality can be very direct and blunt, particularly if you don't always get their point. They may seem patronizing but they mean no harm and may even feel they're doing you a favour by being blunt. Power holds a great attraction for these personalities and they often become the bosses in commercial organizations, although they can also be found in jobs that involve aspects of law nor espionage. They're often the genies of life - the eccentric artists , the mad poets, the sacrificed writers - and perhaps it is their deep wisdom that allows them to glance into the unknown realms. Basils will not criticize or think badly of any action, believing that everything has its place, and there is a reason for everything. Perhaps this explains their basic optimism. Basils could be called the protectors of ideas, imagination and free will.

The sordid or seamier side of life often holds a fascination for Basils, and they could be found indulging in pursuits which the less adventurous would shudder at. It is by walking the fence between what is expected and what is not that gets them into trouble. If they lean too far, they can fall in it - even though their intelligence tells them not to. It is not unusual for Basils to go on to disaster, mental confusion and madness.

The Basil personality enjoys academic pursuits far more than sporting ones, but although philosophy books may be on the bedside table , so too will be those discussing Tantra, the ancient Indian cult of ecstasy. basils believe in the communication between mind , body and spirit and this will extend to their lovemaking. To them, sex is synonymous with spirituality, while marriage is more of a mental commitment - which they'll take very seriously . Generally, Basils are charming and sexy lovers of life, full of bonhomie, despite their calm, sometimes sullen exterior.

Basils are drawn by the mysterious and can be very spiritual, and this interest can take many forms. For example, they may join a sect - possibly rising to become leader ; or become very involved with a world religion: they may search through meditation: or explore other, much darker, sides. Basils are certainly fascinated with the paranormal and will apply cool logic to all that is found, describing it with flair and imagination. this fascination can lead to a life long exploration of things unknown and can occasionally get them into some very hot water. basils will also experiment with hallucinogenic mind-altering drugs as they search for the surreal, and spiritual communication.
The eccentric aunt, the intellectual, those who go crazy with passion - all could be basil personalities, who will fight for the right to be who they are, but are wise enough to let go if they cannot win the battle. The Basil doesn't care because, if need be, there are far more interesting things to pursue.

Norma Gilbert, MIFA, Reg., MIRCST, MBSR, aromatherapist, cranial sacral therapist and teacher:
'Strong powerful, discerning and cerebral, like a monarch basil requires to be treated with dignity and respect and in return will be most trustworthy.'

Warming and balmy in small quantities, it can bring about the sense of true balance and strength.
