Infrared Radiation
The aroma molecules which rise from a corn field can e detected by flying moths between 500 and 2,000 feet above. This remarkable perceptionwas one attributed entirely to the moth's sense of smell, but it's now thought moths also recognize the infrared radiation produced by the aroma molecules. The scientific field of infrared spectrophotometry was discovered by the nineteenth century Irish genius John Tyndall, who aside from discovering why the sky was blue, found that infrared radiation is absorbed by the essential oils of patchouli, sandalwood, cloves, lavender, rose, lemon, thyme, rosemary, spikenard and aniseed, among others.
What significance this infrared factor was vis-a-vis humans is not known but humans themselves are surrounded by an aura of infrared emanation. According to Tomkins and Bird in the Secrets Of The Soil, 'subtle molecular odours that surround human bodies are stimulated to radiation by this infrared emission'.
When I was working in Europe over twenty years ago it was usual for therapists to leave the client under an infrared lamp for five minutes before starting the treatment because it was thought this helped the absorption of essential oils.
This may well be so because infrared improves circulation, opens blood vessels, brings blood to the, so it can absorb better. On the infrared question then, we have several factors to consider: aroma molecules may produce infrared radiation; they also absorb it; human beings are surrounded by infrared emissions; and circulation is helped when they are exposed to more of it.
Clearly, there are interactions that need further investigation which may one day help to explain their efficacy.
